You don’t need to be a pottery artisan or aficionado to appreciate the artistry of Blue Mountain Pottery. Several types of pieces were produced during the company’s operational years, including animal figures, vases and bowls. This specialized brand of pottery is now highly sought after.
If you know where to look, you could return home from your trip to The Blue Mountains and Collingwood with a special piece of your own to add to your collection. Here’s our local guide to Blue Mountain Pottery!
History of Blue Mountain Pottery
The company has humble beginnings, thanks to a dreamer from what was once Czechoslovakia. Jozo Weider arrived in Canada with his family in 1939 after seeking political asylum. He, along with Peter Campbell, bought nine acres to start Blue Mountain Resorts in 1941, and the rest is history!
So, how does Blue Mountain Pottery fit in? You can thank Weider, in part, for that, as well. He founded the company in 1953, along with Dennis Tupy, a mould maker, and Mirek Hambalek, a skilled glazer. The products were sold in the resort gift store to generate additional revenue. Blue Mountain Pottery ceased operations on December 31, 2004, turning their artwork into highly sought after collectibles.
What Makes Blue Mountain Pottery So Special?
Each piece of Blue Mountain Pottery is distinctive due to its signature glazing technique, which ensures no two glaze patterns are identical. Although the company produced pieces in a variety of hues, including black, blue, and red, it became well known for its iconic blue-green colour combination. Some collectors seek out pieces only in a specific colour, while others choose ones they love in any shade.
Blue Mountain Pottery is so beloved that there’s even a Blue Mountain Pottery Collectors Club. They’re an excellent resource for all things related to the beautiful pieces. BMPCC is hosting a convention from May 22 – 24, 2026.
Pieces with a blue-green glaze are usually easy to acquire because of their popularity and high production volume. Colours like mocha and harvest gold are often more difficult to find, making them more desirable. Animal figures are especially popular, particularly the angelfish, and you’ll usually find plenty of jugs and vases. Most collectors prefer pieces without damage, even if it means waiting to buy until they find the perfect one.
Where Can You Find Blue Mountain Pottery?
Since the company no longer exists, your best option for finding Blue Mountain Pottery pieces is to explore secondhand shops and markets in and near Collingwood.
Treasure Trails is just a three-minute walk from The VanderMarck, and Habitat For Humanity ReStore is only six minutes away by car. Make sure to also browse the Thornbury Antique Market and the East End Vendors Market in Stayner, both of which are within 20 minutes of The VanderMarck. During the warmer months, you can also scope out garage sales and events. The Mother of All Yard Sales is a popular annual event that takes place every May, with the proceeds helping youth programs in the South Georgian Bay area.
