A Local’s Guide to the Best Hiking Spots
Highlands Nordic
Located in Duntroon, this cross-country ski centre features 30 kilometres of classic and skate cross-country ski trails. If you prefer snowshoeing, there are 7 kilometres of snowshoe trails. It’s not open for public hiking, tobogganing or mountain biking.

Pretty River and Bruce Trail Loop
About 15 minutes from The VanderMarck is the Pretty River and Bruce Trail Loop. You can hike, run, or snowshoe this 11.27-kilometre loop, which is considered moderate and takes approximately 4 to 4.5 hours to complete on foot.
George Christie Nature Trails
If you’re looking for an easier trail, the George Christie Nature Trails is about 8 minutes away by car. It’s another loop, but much shorter, requiring an hour or less to walk 3.38 kilometres. This beautiful area, where animals like deer and birds are plentiful, is ideal for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking and running.
Georgian Trail
If you’re ready to commit to a full day of hiking or cycling, hit the Georgian Trail. This point-to-point moderate trail is a 17-minute drive from The VanderMarck and takes approximately 8 to 9 hours to hike. During the winter, you can cross-country ski or snowshoe. There are plenty of stopping points along the 33.80-kilometre route for refueling breaks and photo ops.
Duncan Caves Trail
A little further away is the Duncan Caves Trail. It takes approximately 25 minutes to drive to this scenic 11.75-kilometre loop. You can enjoy views of the Duncan Caves, thick tree canopies, and a variety of wildlife. The trail is open for snowshoeing in the winter. Plan to finish the hike in about 4 to 4.5 hours.
Helpful tip: Parking is extremely limited, so it’s best to arrive early or plan to go on a weekday.
Nottawasaga Bluffs Trail
Another moderate hike that’s about 25 minutes away is the Nottawasaga Bluffs Trail. You can finish this loop in about 2 to 2.5 hours. It’s approximately 8.37 kilometres of beauty, known for its spectacular views and gorgeous fall foliage. You can hike this area or, in winter, go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing.
